“Enclose the South, Block the North and Middle Cut-off”engineering measures

Enclosing in the South indicates that the southern verge of Kubuqi Desert is enclosed to enable that the vegetations recover the growth to improve the vegetations coverage and prevent the sand dune spreading.

Blocking in the North indicates that over 240 km2 sand prevention and river protection lockrand forest belt is erected on the northern verge of desert and southern bank of Yellow River to lower the wind speed, reduce the sandy dust, implement the wind prevention and sand fixation as well as impede the quicksand inflowing into the Yellow River.

Cutting in the Middle indicates that the highway through desert is constructed in Kubuqi Desert, the greening should follow the highway, to realize the zoning based on highway and treating in seperation.

Engineering measures on zoning based on highway as well as division and control

This technology means that, according to “Periphery Locking, Center Penetrating, Zoning based on Highway and Treatment by Separation” strategy, five 343km-long highways in full length through desert are constructed in Kubuqi Desert to realize “Division and Control” as well as implement the lockrand forest ecology engineering along Yellow River and the composite ecology engineering with forest-grass and liquorice generation on desert and arid zone.

Peak Eliminating for Valley Filling

This technology mainly covers such three kinds of forms as “keep-off in front and pulling behind”, “No keep-off in front and pulling behind” and “Firstly keep-off in front and secondly pulling behind”. While fixing smaller moving dune, give primacy to shrub planting on windward slope and flatten the upside of dune where the forestation isn’t implemented to enable that the moving dune is fixed and the height falls so as to reach the peak shaving target. Currently, the height in the controlling region of Kubuqi Desert declines by around 1/3 in average.

Forestation by Aerial Seeding

This technology means that such modes as ground treatment, divided seeding, repeated seeding and re-seeding are taken to implement the air seeding and afforestation on the moving dunes set with sand-protecting barrier based on local conditions. The effective combination between sand-protecting barrier and air seeding increases the adhesive force of seed after air seeding and improves the survival rate of afforestation so as to effectively impede the wind sand spreading and restrict the flowing dune moving. There is special airport in Kubuqi, with three aircrafts.

 

Sand Control and Soil Improvement with Liquorice

Liquorice is a kind of perennial tonic traditional Chinese medicinal materials, drought-resistant and no-tillage and free-irrigation. It is provided with good adaptability and obvious improvement function for Desert and saline and alkaline land, meanwhile, plentiful symbiotic nitrogen fixing bacteria on the liquorice root nodule can increase the content of nitrogenous fertilizer in the soil to cultivate the soil fertility. The biomass of liquorice is great and functions better in wind prevention and sand fixation. The biomass on the ground reaches 187kg/mu, partial biomass may reach 200kg/mu, and the biomass of underground root-stem reaches 475kg/mu.
